Alamos
to Choix--74 miles
Leave Alamos in the
morning heading east we will cross the beautiful Arroyo Cuchijaqui
and continue along the base of the Sierra Madre. We will pass
through many villages as we wind our way through the desert thorn
scrub and cross the Rio Fuerte. We will proceed on a 12-mile section
of pavement, the only pavement on our trip. Arrive in Choix mid-afternoon,
check into hotel, explore Choix and have dinner. Choix is a small
but busy Mexican town with interesting sights to explore. There
is an old church called San Ignacio De Loyola built in the early
1600's and an observation tower downtown with beautiful views
of the surrounding area. |

to Urique--110 miles
Rise early and have
breakfast, fuel up and get ready for the longest day/ride of the
week. We will head north to the Rio Fuerte and the reservoir of
Lake Huitis. We will put our bikes on a barge and cross the lake.
We will pass through the old mining town of La Reforma, and start
the steep climb up into the Sierra Madre. This day we will visit
many small villages and climb thousands of feet into the pine
and oak forest. We will reach an elevation of approximately 6500
feet at Mesa de Arturo. Heading east we will ride to a scenic
overlook on the Urique canyon rim. This vista is picture postcard
perfect. The elevation from the overlook to the bottom of the
canyon is approximately 6000 ft. The road switches back over and
over with sheer cliffs of a thousand feet on the canyon side |

The
village of Urique looks like a dot off in the distance and the
Urique river a shimmering silver ribbon. This view from the canyon
rim is truly memorable. As
we descend down into the canyon we will pass Tarahumara stick
houses and cave dwellings. The Indian people weave beautiful pine
needle baskets and have a variety of interesting handcrafts for
sale. Down, down, down we go finally arriving at the village of
Urique. Urique is located along the Urique river, which is one
of the main tributaries draining the Copper Canyon area. We will
check into a nice hotel, have dinner and explore the area. There
is a section of road that parallels the river and offers access
to beautiful swimming holes and sandy beaches.

indian country. We will stop for a brief visit to look at an old
mission church that is open to the public. Bahuichivo is located
along the train tracks of the famous Chihuahua Al Pacifico Railroad.
We will proceed riding south on a high pine
forested plateau. Another day of beautiful views and interesting
villages. Arriving in the afternoon in Temoris we will check into
our hotel, and spend the afternoon exploring the local area. There
is a beautiful scenic overlook with a view of the Rio Septentrion
2000 ft. below. From there we can enjoy the view and then proceed
to Temoris train station. This is the location of the longest
tunnel of the Chihuahua Al Pacifico train; the tunnel makes a
360 degree circle through solid rock. We can enjoy a quick swim
in the Rio Septentrion and head back to town for dinner. Temoris
and the train station of Temoris have a difference of approximately
2000 ft. in elevation.

then head west through pine forests and high mountain valleys
towards Chinipas. As we slowly descend into the canyon of Chinipas
and the Chinipas River we will stop and explore the old mining
town of Palamjero. We will continue our descent to the colonial
village of Chinipas located on the banks of the river. This village
was founded in the 1700's and represents the beautiful colonial
architecture of that era. Chinipas has a rich history of mining.
There is a massive stone aqueduct system, train tunnels and a
locomotive in the main plaza of town. Chinipas is off the grid
and relies on a generator for its electrical power in the evenings. After having lunch and checking into our lodging in Chinipas, we will cross the Chinipas River and ride 20 miles to a beautiful swimming hole for the afternoon.
