Fall Recon Trip

Green is the word that comes to mind this year. Emerald madness everywhere! Finally, after a dozen years, the heavens are bursting and bringing the countryside back to life. Huge purple and yellow Amapa trees are in full bloom early, and water is flowing in all the arroyos as little mini waterfalls tumble over boulders in side canyons. Both reservoirs (Huites and Mocuzari) are almost full. Huites, near Choix (our first day destination on our seven-day loop), is within three feet of the high water mark.

The Huites Ferry
The Huites ferry makes its way to the northend landing.

With the heavy summer rains some of the roads have blown out pretty bad and are in rough shape. The back way to Choix (our normal route) has eroded to single track-like conditions in some places, with boulders the size of beach balls and ruts deep enough to rival the real Copper Canyon. Steve and I headed out for a recon trip last week and found ourselves wondering the first day out when it was going to be over. We pushed ahead with the thought of our new mantra spinning in our heads “momentum is your friend, momentum is your friend.” That and the thought of a good bone soaking at the hot springs in Aguas Calientes kept us afloat.

Greetings to all!

This is the inaugural edition of what will hopefully be a twice yearly Sierra Madre Motorcycle Adventure newsletter. My hope is that it will give those of you that have ridden here with me an update and those who are thinking about a trip some inspiration.

New Limited Support Trip Options

Because of the ever-changing road conditions in this mountainous region I am working towards offering more customized and limited support trip options. Keep in mind limited support does not mean no support. Because of my ever-expanding network of friends and local support connections in these remote areas, good gas, food and lodging will always be available. In addition, the reduced price for a limited support trip option is all-inclusive. These specialized tours offer smaller, more intimate group sizes, facilitate river crossings via walking bridges, and generally add more flexibility to the trip. They’re also available with very short notice. I encourage groups of four or more to contact me throughout the winter if you are interested in this limited support option. For more information on this subject please contact me at ricardo@smmoto.com. We will be updating our web site soon to reflect this addition.

Border Issue Politics

The Sonora-Arizona commission met here in Alamos over the past week with discussions of border issues as one main topic. Our hope is that with the new Sonoran governor (Bours) and his desire to make the state of Sonora a ‘free zone’ (similar to Baja), getting multiple bikes on a trailer put on one permit may be a reality in the near future. Refer to www.smmoto.com/border.html for more information on this topic.

I will post this and all future newsletters on my web site.
